Paris Blues

Opens on March 17

Director: Martin Ritt Run Time: 98 min. Format: Digital Projection Release Year: 1961

Starring: Diahann Carroll, Joanne Woodward, Louis Armstrong, Paul Newman, Sidney Poitier

PARIS BLUES features Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier as Ram and Eddie, a pair of ex-pat American jazz musicians living in Paris. When they meet Connie (Carroll) and Lillian (Woodward), two young and pretty tourists, they face a collision between their professional lives and their love lives. Though United Artists largely defanged the narrative of the original novel—which focuses prominently on interracial romance–PARIS BLUES still manages to engage with issues of race and freedom of expression in a way that few films were concerned with at the time.

Please Note: All in-person screenings at the Brattle now require proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test (within 72-hours). See the Covid Response page for complete details.
