Directed by the legendary African American photographer/filmmaker Gordon Parks, who deliberately recast the main character from a white private eye into a Black one, SHAFT follows the titular lead as he goes up against the Italian mob in an attempt to rescue a Black gangster’s daughter. This classic tough guy film was a monster hit and, along with a few other films, sparked the Blaxploitation craze of the 1970s.
