Ruby Dee stands out as one of the few professional actors in a cast mostly made up of famous African American musicians in this heavily fictionalized biopic of the father of the blues, W.C. Handy (Cole). Dee plays Handy’s wife Elizabeth as a good-girl who tries to be supportive even though she can’t understand her husband’s obsession with popular music.
