One of his first films to really establish his signature subject of familial relations, Kore-eda’s STILL WALKING chronicles 24-hours in the life of a family scarred by tragedy. For 12 years, the Yokoyamas have gathered to commemorate the death of Junpei, the eldest and clearly favorite son, while Ryota and Chinami, his brother and sister, are left to contend with their bitter and bereft parents. Deceptively modest in its depiction of this unhappy family, STILL WALKING is a remarkable film that resonates far after it has faded from the screen.
