While Bruce Willis ended the 90s on a high note (THE SIXTH SENSE), he entered the decade still trying to find his footing as a movie star. After his sensational success in Moonlighting and Die Hard, Willis was given a lot of rope to do what he wanted but he often let his ego get in the way. At least that’s reportedly part of the reason that this ambitious (read ‘expensive’) adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s satirical novel was such a bomb upon its release. Unlike some of its ilk, THE BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES hasn’t been reassessed as a masterpiece or anything—it’s still widely considered a disaster—but it is fun to watch as you wonder how a lot of very talented people became convinced they were spinning gold when really they were making something else entirely.
