We meet Carlobianchi and Doriano, two charming, washed-up, small-time Italian crooks, in the middle of what seems like a never-ending bender of a road trip. Along their slow motion, alcoholic grand tour of the Venetian countryside, they pick up sad-sack Giulio, a shy architecture student who reluctantly warms to the sodden pair and indulges their rants about the folly of globalization and the slow decline of local color. It turns out there’s a method to the madness, however, as Carlobianchi and Doriano are trying to make it to the airport to pick up an old partner-in-crime returning from exile in Argentina—and perhaps dig up some long buried cash in the process. Of course, they may never make it when every roadside tavern offers another opportunity for just one more drink.
A rambling shaggy-dog road movie with a killer soundtrack of Italian indie rock and clear echoes of Wenders, Jarmusch, and Kaurismäki, Francesco Sossai’s dazzling sophomore feature is many things at once: a road movie, a casual caper, a tribute to a vanishing industrial Italy, a scruffy intergenerational odyssey, and free-flowing bender through time and space. – adapted from notes by Music Box Films
