Though pretty much exclusively appearing in films set in contemporary—or at least modern—America, Stanton has a memorable role in Martin Scorsese’s controversial classic about the life and death of Jesus. Here he plays the disciple Paul and, along with Keitel as Judas and Dafoe as Jesus, helped to challenge the idea of what an ancient person in an historical drama could or should sound like.
