The lives of the residents of a rundown tenement in Edo era Japan are depicted in Kurosawa’s version of Maxim Gorky’s classic proletariat play. With a central plot that verges on film noir featuring jealousy, lust, and corruption, THE LOWER DEPTHS also includes moments of tenderness, tragedy, and comedy all of which add up to a humanistic, though bleak, portrayal of the denizens of the low end of society.
