Professor Bernard Quatermass, a British rocket scientist with an unnerving talent for getting tangled up with alien threats, is sort of a prototype for the character of Doctor Who. In THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT (or The Creeping Unknown as it was released in the U.S.), Quatermass is in pursuit of a rapidly mutating astronaut who has returned to Earth a dangerously changed man.
