Director Nancy Kelly and screenwriter Anne Makepeace tell the semi-fictionalized tale of Lalu (aka Polly Bemis), a Chinese immigrant who was sold into slavery and fought for her own independence in 1880s Idaho. Weaving together elements of adventure, romance, drama, and social commentary, this film is special in many ways. Lost for a time, it’s now available to theater audiences thanks to a 4K restoration in 2020.
