Nightingale Vocal Ensemble – Photoplay

Coming on January 26

Run Time: 90 min.

Special Live Music and Film Event

In a sequel to their groundbreaking 2023 album COMPOSITION SPED UP, Nightingale Vocal Ensemble presents PHOTOPLAY. An ensemble of 9 virtuoso singers will spontaneously improvise soundtracks to a variety of short films. The films will range from early silent pictures (including primordial experiments in animation and abstraction) to contemporary works and the winners of Nightingale’s 2024 Short Film Contest. Through free improvisation, Nightingale will create a truly unique live experience of immediately visceral expression.

“Draws as much from Ornette Coleman, in spirit, as it does from centuries of tradition in vocal performance… COMPOSITION SPED UP is a unique statement that delights the ears, even while occasionally boggling the mind.” —Scott Schaffer, Right Brain Records

“Free-flowing excursions through uncharted territories… A treasure trove of moods and sounds… Composition Sped Up can be a challenge to listen to… persist and it turns into a transcendent experience.” —Hans Werksman, Here Comes The Flood

Nightingale is a Boston-based vocal ensemble dedicated to curating unique and imaginative concert experiences by performing members’ original compositions, presenting varied ensemble and chamber works, and engaging in innovative collaborations.

We create conceptual concert experiences with exceptional musicianship, authentic expression, and thoughtful audience engagement. We aim to address every listener in the room with holistic, eclectic performances presented as a collage of art forms. Featuring compositions from inside and outside the ensemble, our music seeks to encourage meaningful reflection on human experience.
