An unsung, anti-capitalist masterwork from Japanese punk auteur Masashi Yamamoto, ROBINSON’S GARDEN echoes the work of American indie provocateurs Jim Jarmusch and Tom DiCillo (who serves as cinematographer). On a drunken walk home, bohemian drug-dealer Kumi (Ota) discovers an abandoned building on the outskirts of Tokyo. Attracted by this vast space rampant with luxuriant vegetation, she promptly sells her belongings and retreats from the world. She carves an island for herself out of the sprawling concrete squat, now free to grow cabbage and express herself in any way she pleases. – adapted from notes by Kani Releasing Brattle Debut!
