The Belly of an Architect
Director: Peter Greenaway Run Time: 118 min. Format: 35mm Film Release Year: 1987
Starring: Brian Dennehy, Chloe Webb, Lambert Wilson, Sergio Fantoni, Stefania Casini
It seems improbable but, according to our records, this is the Brattle Debut for another of Greenaway’s mid-period masterpieces… and his first experiment with a more internationally known cast. At the time of THE BELLY OF AN ARCHITECT, Brian Dennehy had already had a ten-year career in Hollywood—playing mostly cops, heavies, and buddies—on TV and in the movies. It must have been a crazy chance for him to take the lead in this typically perverse and surreal Greenaway film. Dennehy plays an American architect who travels to Rome with his wife (Webb) to set up an exhibit. Soon, the architect’s health, marriage, and life all begin to collapse under the weight of his appetites, the stress of the exhibit, and his wife’s infidelities. Brattle Debut!
“Dennehy is outstanding as a man out of his element, and the cinematic rendering of Rome’s classic structures is a visual feast.” – Tom Meek, Cambridge Day
