A forgotten New York poet Ed Saxberger (Dafoe), who has long since retired his pen in favor of a stable job at the post office, finds himself rediscovered by a new generation—or at least by a small circle of enthusiastic young artists steeped in nostalgia for a time they never knew. Ed is lured back into believing he deserves more than he ever received in his heyday by the seductive nature of adoration and the specific attention of an alluring actress (Lee) who is also a part of the circle. LATE FAME contains, as always, a standout performance by Dafoe and is a thoughtful, wryly funny portrait of a city that has, quite possibly, lost its soul.
“There is more character in the lines of Dafoe’s face than many actors can covey with their entire performance. He’s the true saving grace of the film, creating a character who seems to be evolving before our very eyes. Like Diane Keaton, Dafoe makes it look so easy, as if he’s inhabiting the role rather than playing it. This is one of his best performances.” – Odie Henderson, The Boston Globe
“Willem Dafoe gives a performance so natural it barely looks like acting at all.” – Xan Brooks, The Guardian
